Garlic Festival

Garlic Festival

Saturday July 29, 2023 8am-11am

At Mission Garden

This event is FREE. All monetary gifts are appreciated.

Mission Garden staff and volunteers planted many varieties of garlic over the winter and have been tending it carefully for months. They are excited to show off what they’ve grown at the Garlic Festival in July. This is a great opportunity to learn about garlic and how to grow it here, and to taste it in a variety of ways!

Garlic will be on sale, both for culinary use and for planting in your own garden. The garlic meant for planting will come with growing instructions. (While you are at the Garden Shop, also pick up I’itoi’s onions for planting and inspect our new collection of seed packets from Native Seeds/SEARCH.)

Starting when the garden opens at 8am, the Garden Shop will also have 50 loaves of garlic bread made by Don Guerra at Barrio Bread. This is a proprietary garlic loaf not regularly offered at Barrio Bread, and made with garlic grown at Mission Garden. Limit 1 per customer.

In the Garden’s Event Ramada, Mission Garden volunteers will feature tastings of three specialty garlics (Chinese, Italian, and Mexican)--each offered raw, sauteed, and roasted–for tasting comparison.

Enter our raffle for a fabulous gift basket of garlic-related products!

In Mission Garden’s Placita, guest vendors and local farmers will also offer their garlic and produce. These include Breckenfeld Family Growers and Dreamflower Garden. Iskashitaa Refugee Network will offer their prepared garlic goods and Tucson Chocolate will feature garlic ice cream, made with sweet roasted garlic and dates. Chef Enrique Alcantar will be making a garlic dish as well.

Explore the Timeline Gardens to learn about each distinct garlic variety grown by each cultural group, and take home different traditional recipes suggested by those garden volunteers and chefs!

Agua Frescas will be available in the Placita.

Please contact Emily Rockey, Mission Garden Supervisor, emily@missiongarden.org, (520) 955-5200 x3 with any additional questions

We are proud to present a family friendly show that celebrates the many talents of the Studio One Community.

Artistic Director: Rachael Reyes

Faculty: Isabela Baltierrez, Scarlett Nash, Riley Parish, Morgan Ranney, Roman Ruiz, Ashley Schrader, Ellsie Schrader, Amelie Weadock, Billy Young, and Regina Reyes

Synopisis:

When young Charlie wins a golden ticket to the mysterious Wonka Chocolate Factory, it's the chance of a lifetime to feast on the sweets and chocolates that have always been right under his nose but unaffordable for the Bucket family. Could it also be his family’s route out of poverty? Along with the other winners--Veruca Salt, Violet Beauregarde, Mike Teavee, and Augustus Gloop--Charlie is swept inside of the mysterious factory with his Grandpa Joe. Inside, the winners encounter a magical world full of amazement, innovation, sugary treats, and, of course, Oompa-Loompas. But as the winners begin to let their greed and selfish nature's get the better of them, it seems that everything is not as sweet as it seems. Finally, Charlie is the last child standing--the only child not to have succumbed to the sweet temptations of Willy Wonka’s magical world. His humble, loyal nature has not gone unnoticed by Mr. Wonka, and Charlie’s reward is more than he could ever have dreamed.
